NEW YORK (AFM) - African players populate Europe’s football leagues in ever greater numbers, and the trend is also picking up in the United States. A country that has been slow in adopting football in general and African footballers in particular, the USA’s Major League Soccer is beginning to turn to African talent.
 
Elephants hunting big game
ACCRA (AFM) - And though legendary Brazilian boss Carlos Aberto Parreira, who is currently leading struggling South Africa, insists that an African side is still several tournaments away from being considered a favourite, he did cause a stir at the ongoing African Cup of Nations in Ghana by saying earlier this week that 2006 finalists Cote d’Ivoire are the runaway class of the continent. He even implied that they could be the best African side of all-time.
 
Football flowers on the Saharan ‘shore’
BAMAKO (AFM) - Taking its name from the Arabic sahil, meaning shore, the Sahel is an inhospitable strip of land stretching nearly 4000 kilometres from the Atlantic coast of Senegal to sprawling Sudan and the Red Sea. It separates the relative prosperities of the Maghreb to the North from the Gold Coast and great plains to the south and contains such romantic remnants of the past as Timbuktu and Bobo-Dioulasso. It is a place where cultures, religions and languages meld.

 
Premier League duo fire Egypt dreams
CAIRO (AFM) - With a strong league and some of the biggest clubs in Africa, Egypt has not traditionally sent many players abroad. However, after two consecutive CAF Africa Cup of Nations confirmed the presence of a golden generation of players, several of the Pharaohs are now plying their trade abroad. And what’s more, they are succeeding.
